I see dead people! Only joking. A
very worthy list. I know nothing of Kieslowski, sadly. Scorsese, Bergman, Kurosawa and Hitchcock would certainly be in my pantheon. Kubrick would rate highly with me as a director but I really think Malick is way, way over-rated. Among the honourable mentions I would replace Chaplin with Keaton as I acknowledge Chaplin more than I like him and even then prefer his sound films to his silents.

I really fought back and forth between a few sets of directors. I fought whether Godard or Truffaut would be in the 10 or honorable mention. I fought whether I would put Chaplin or Keaton on it and whether it was going to be Hawks or John Ford.

In hind-sight, I should have just expanded the honorable mention. As for Malick, he's probably an iffy choice given he has four films in thirty years, but I find them beautiful. With Kieslowski, I highly reccomend his Three Colors Trilogy, the Decalouge and Double Life of Veronique. Outside of those films, I don't know his work well, but they more than make up for it.

You know, for some reason I didn't even notice that Ford wasn't on the list. Shame on me! Making lists of this kind is quite difficult - I always want to keep changing them. I will take your recommendation of Kieslowski and check him out first opportunity.
So many films, so little time!
